What We Believe
First Presbyterian Church is a Christian community defined by our adherence to God’s Word and dependence on the Holy Spirit. We believe Word & Spirit were the basis for the church’s formation on the day of Pentecost and, therefore, should be our foundation as well. Thus, our guiding documents, which consist of our beliefs, mission, confessions, and core values are reflective of the premium we place on scriptural authority and the Spirit’s empowering presence in our lives. Furthermore, our aim is to align our behavior with the intentions expressed by these documents. We acknowledge such an ideal is impossible without God’s help. Yet, as our behaviors align with our intentions, we fulfill our desire to become passionately devoted followers of Jesus Christ.
We believe:
-
The Bible is the inspired Word of God and our sole authority for faith and practice.
-
The criterion by which the Bible is to be interpreted is through Jesus Christ.
-
The unity and trinity of God, eternally existing in three equal persons Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
-
In the full deity and humanity of Jesus Christ.
-
In the sinfulness of all persons. One result of sin is shattered relationships with God, self, and others.\
-
Eternal salvation and restored relationships are uniquely possible through faith in Jesus Christ who died for us, was raised by God from the dead, and is coming again. This salvation is offered to all people.
-
In the work of the Holy Spirit in salvation and in the renewing presence and power of the Holy Spirit in the life of the believer and the church.
-
In the equality and essential dignity of men and women of all races and classes, recognizing that all are made in the image of God. We believe both men and women are divinely gifted and called to develop and use their God-given gifts for the good of the church and society.

WITNESSING TO THE GOOD NEWS
Flowing out of God’s love for the world is our commitment to lovingly witness the good news of Jesus Christ to our family, friends and other seekers. (John. 3:16-17)
CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY
We value as essential establishing and nurturing a Christian community united in love for Jesus Christ and one another. (John 13:34-35)
DISCIPLESHIP
We are dedicated to helping Christians become passionate in their devotion to the person, mission, and lifestyle of Jesus Christ. (Matthew 28:16-20)
THE MINISTRY OF GRACE
Having received and benefited from God’s unconditional love, our desire is to minister His grace to others. (Ephesians 2:1-10)
COMPASSION
We believe that showing love in tangible, practical ways for the neediest in the community is essential for true discipleship (Matthew 25:31-46).
